Pavot Vase
The Audo Copenhagen Pavot Vase takes ancient vessel forms and reinterprets them through a modern lens, creating something that looks like it could've been discovered in an archaeological dig but feels completely contemporary. Designed by Colin King, the vase is cast in aluminium with a brown bronzed patina finish that gives it that antique, lived-in character from day one. The base draws inspiration from the delicate form of a poppy seed head - "pavot" is French for poppy - with subtle curves echoing nature's organic beauty. At 28.7cm tall with a 16.4cm diameter base tapering to an 8.7cm opening, it's got these elegant proportions that add height and presence to tables and consoles without looking top-heavy or awkward. Works beautifully filled with dramatic single stems, loose branches, or dried arrangements, but honestly looks equally compelling sitting empty as a standalone sculptural object.
What makes the Pavot Vase more interesting than typical bronze-finished pieces is how that characterful patina creates depth and visual texture rather than just looking uniformly metallic. The cast aluminium construction means it's got substance and weight that makes it feel valuable, but it's not so heavy that moving it becomes a project when you're rearranging. The opening is wide enough for most flower stems but narrow enough to support arrangements without needing a frog or excessive greenery as filler. The footed base with those poppy-inspired curves gives it architectural presence that grounds it visually, making it work equally well on dining tables where it becomes a centerpiece, hallway consoles where it adds vertical interest, or side tables where you need something substantial. The bronzed finish develops more character over time rather than looking pristine forever, which matters if you don't want to stress about maintaining perfect surfaces.
Audo Copenhagen was formed by uniting MENU, by Lassen, and The Audo, creating a brand that collaborates with designers who bring unexpected perspectives to functional objects. Colin King, professionally trained as a dancer before moving into styling and product design, works at the intersection of spatial awareness and aesthetic sensibility. Based in Tribeca, New York City, he balances styling for publications like Architectural Digest and T Magazine with designing from his studio. His work draws continuous inspiration from everyday rituals, gestures, and imperfections - finding beauty in how objects evolve within spaces over time. The Pavot Vase reflects this philosophy, blending historical references with modern simplicity to create pieces that bring sophistication and a sense of history to contemporary interiors.
